7800 South Sewer Pipe Burst
|
| |
The 7800 South Sewer Pipe Burst Project was designed to increase the sewer pipeline capacity along the major portion of 7800 Street located in the City of West Jordan. The goals of this project were achieved utilizing a combination of open and pipe bursting methods. The pipe bursting section of the project, which extended over 4560 feet, included bursting through an existing 15 inch sewer host pipe with a 28 inch bursting head while placing 24 inch HDEP pipe. The upsize of this pipe burst places the project in experimental ranges, and to date this is the largest diameter pipe burst ever completed in the state of Utah. Based upon the engineers estimate, the pipe bursting costs were anticipated to be 14% less per linear foot than the open-cut segment. Additionally, the construction duration was also reduced by an excess of 30% due to elimination of complications with backfill moisture content, bracing of existing utilities, and paving restrictions generated by winter weather conditions. It was apparent at the project bid opening that the contractors concurred with the anticipated benefits of pipe bursting. All of the bids came in under the engineer’s estimate with the successful bid indicating pipe bursting costs were 24% less per linear foot when compared to open-cut costs. The use of pipe bursting, through proper engineering and cost effective design solutions, planning, and construction, allowed the contractor to avoid lane closures, eliminated right-of-way constraints and the potential need for construction easements, avoided costly repairs to surface infrastructure, eliminated impacts to the buried and overhead utilities, and reduced environmental impacts such as noise and dust. Additionally, the project was completed on an expedited construction schedule during harsh winter conditions and came in under budget.
