SR-56 and Lund/Cross Hollow Signals

PEC's performed a complete design and railroad pre-emption for two signals in Cedar City on SR-56. The first location was SR-56 and Lund Hwy/West View Drive.  This intersection has railroad tracks, a culvert and a cattle guard all on the north leg.  Therefore, this required some creative design for crossing pedestrians, placing signal equipment, and also allowing for the railroad equipment needs.  PEC designed a traffic signal to stop traffic approximately 50’ back from the intersection so that vehicles will not stop on the tracks and possibly be trapped during the railroad pre-emption and train crossing.  This intersection required close coordination with Cedar City as they were analyzing the need to possibly widen Lund Hwy to accommodate a 100’ right of way width for future growth.  Due to that potential growth, UDOT decided to widen the tracks to the 100’ ultimate width at the railroad tracks.  PEC designed that typical section and then tapered back to existing 24’ pavement width as soon as possible to minimize costs.  Several utilities were an issue at this intersection and Cardno TBC were contracted to determine the utilities in question at each intersection.  Extensive work was done to coordinate with both the Railroad and Cedar City.  Additional coordination was also orchestrated with Rocky Mountain Power and the Department of Natural Resources.  The package is a full design bid build.

The other intersection was a 1400’ away at SR-56 and Aviation Way/Cross Hollow.  This intersection involves two sets of railroad tracks, one on each side of the road.  Therefore, our design efforts were complicated due to the nature of this intersection.  Environmental documentation and clearance were obtained by Lars Anderson on this project and submitted to UDOT Region 4 for approval.  Coordination of potholing with our sub-consultant was also part of this project due to the number of critical utilities in the area.  Other services included survey, right of way research, and additional utility investigation (as the utilities changed drastically through the design process).  PEC provided the overall QA/QC and also assisted with the railroad coordination.
